The Role of Assistive Technology in Improving Daily Life for People with IDD

Assistive technology for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) refers to devices, software, or equipment that can help people with disabilities perform daily tasks with ease and independence. These devices, whether used for adaptive living (daily tasks), or more advanced activities including employment, sporting, and social interaction can help to increase an individual's quality of life and their independence.

Assistive Technology
  • Communication. For people with IDD that face difficulty in effective verbal communication, assistive technology such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices allow them to express themselves. These devices are advanced as speech-generating devices, and as simple as picture boards, all of which allow people with disabilities to further communicate their emotions, needs, and wants.

  • Mobility. Wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, etc. can help people with IDD not only move around more independently but also access ADA-compliant environments, further continuing with promoting inclusive growth in social, educational, and vocational opportunities.

  • Education. There are a variety of assistive technologies available for education at every age level - including audiobooks, specialized software, text-to-speech programs, and more. These devices provide access to necessary educational resources for individuals leading to academic success, job opportunities, and improved cognitive abilities.

  • Recreation. People with IDD now have increased opportunities to participate in recreational activities with the help of assistive technology such as adaptive sports equipment, sensory tools, and gaming devices. Not only does this help with mental and physical health for an individual with IDD, but also improves social skills, and helps to relieve stress and anxiety.

Assistive technology can help people with IDD perform tasks that were previously difficult or impossible, and will further develop an individual’s confidence and independence. The creation of these devices continues to advance as technology and knowledge grows, and has opened up new and exciting opportunities for people with IDD. Click here to access our downloadable PDF!
